A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit northwestern Turkey at dawn on Wednesday, according to the American Geological Survey.
In January 2000, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit Elazig, killing more than 40 people.
In November of the same year, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in the Aegean Sea killed 114 people and injured more than 1,000 in Turkey.
